I'm anxious to see how it plays out. Spanking being a relative term I'd say that the domestic corporal punishment episode between husband and wife in the book is more of a whipping/beating. The scene in the book is somewhat oddly presented it almost happens, then we skip ahead to the following morning, than the final events of the previous night are retold. In sum he takes a belt to her bare ass. But she would have gotten off without much punishment at all if she hadn't been such a defiant whiner (come on lady, just take a few whacks to make hubby look good in front of the guys, you know the ones he's asking to put their lives on the line). She's whooped because she almost gets Jamie and his followers killed by disobeying his orders not to follow him. He wants to go light on the love of his life but his position as leader of the clan's "army" demands that he keeps his woman in her place, meaning she needs to cut out the insubordination. The scene is controversial for many. But only controversial if you view it through revisionary 21st century lenses. This is simply what would happen to a mid-eighteenth century Scottish wife who defied her husband and almost gets him killed in the process. We are told repeatedly that this is how he and his sister had been raised. I think he's rather mystified that his wife resists his chastisement. In the end, by the way, he promises to never whip her again.
Having just seen this scene translated from page to TV screen I have to say that it was about as good as one has a right to expect from even premium TV. From what I've read about the "spanking" scene in the TV show I know that the star did not use a body double, that the scene was well choreographed but played out with some spontaneity and that the participants said that it actually was a light belt that was used not the heavy leather belt that Jamie took off his pants.
