Yes, Butch, in "Bluebeard's Eighth Wife" (1938) we can see Gary Cooper put Claudette Colbert across his lap and raise his hand to spank her... but we never see the spanks land. For quite a while, I suspected that the director, Ernst Lubitsch, was deliberately hiding the spanking from us for some bizarre reason or other. But no, I was wrong. I got ahold of a copy of the trailer for that film, and in that short trailer, they do show Cooper's hand landing twice on Claudette's derriere. I have no idea why the trailer would show spanking but the main feature would not. Maybe something to do with time constraints?
